Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
